The Right Direction for Guelph
The desire for fiscal responsibility and a more accountable city leadership has brought forth a sweeping change at Guelph City Hall. Five of the seven “spend it to high heaven seven” clique were tossed from city hall including the former mayor Karen Farbridge. The will of the majority has spoken with a clear and resounding voice.
Here is Guelph’s new City Council.
Mayor - Kate Quarrie
Ward 1 - Rocco Furfaro, Laura Baily
Ward 2 - Dan Moziar, Ray Ferraro
Ward 3 - Dan Schnurr, Maggie Laidlaw
Ward 4 - Gloria Kovach, David Birtwistle
Ward 5 - Cathy Downer, Lise Burcher
Ward 6 - Peter Hamtak, Christine Billings

Advertisment Brought to You by the Farbridge Campaign Team
If anyone ever wondered if the two Guelph newspapers were in Farbridge’s pockets they need doubt no longer.
After the editorials from both the Guelph Tribune - Fri Nov 7/03 and the Guelph Mercury - Sat Nov 8/03, it is crystal clear that both Guelph newspapers have no hesitation in providing an unbalanced message in an eleventh hour, desperate grab at the withering support for Farbridge’s bid to continue to control our city and our lifestyles.
One of the councillor candidates recently informed GA News that the information has been so biased that the only text missing at the bottom was “a paid advertisement sponsored by Karen Farbridge’s campaign team”..... How true.
GA News has heard that because of the non neutral reporting, that some candidates are actually considering declining interviews or even providing quotes to the newspapers due to the biased filtration process that occurs between the facts, the spoken word and what appears in print.
Sadly, the two Guelph papers have abandoned their journalist integrity and obligations to provide the unbiased presentation of the W5 facts, in exchange for a position of last resort - pleading and begging the voting public to support the unsupportable - Karen Farbridge. They have seen the writing on the wall. They smell the change in the wind. And they are sweating the outcome.
How desperate the situation has become for Farbridge and her special interest cronies.
The wet dry plus plus plus +++++ has awoken the will of the majority and re directed former political apathy towards the enlivened attention of ALL issues downtown.
The overwhelming majority of Guelph is shouting in harmony - We Won’t, We Can’t Take It Anymore! - We WILL Elect Kate Quarrie for Mayor and We WILL Vote In Other Like Minded Councillors - Tomorrow on November 10/03!
By Your Vote, the tyranny of the minority special interest groups will be over soon!

Kate Quarrie Wins Guelph Mayoral Debate!
Kate Quarrie emerged as the clear winner of last night’s mayoral debate held at the 200+ attendee, standing room only, hall at the Ramada Hotel.
Holding present mayor Karen Farbridge to account for Farbridge’s previous track record of unbridled unaccountability, Kate Quarrie assured Guelph taxpayers that they will know how their money is being spent when Quarrie is elected as mayor.
Not just for WalMart but for fiscal accountability, full and honest disclosure - Kate Quarrie is the clear choice for Guelph Mayor on November 10/03.

Alan Pickersgill failed to mention that he ran as the Communist Party of Canada Candidate in multiple Federal Elections, when all candidates were asked to disclose their present and previous political party affiliations in the Guelph Election 2003 Ward 1, televised debate.
Scott Tracey, in his Thursday October 23, 2003 column in the Guelph Mercury, informs voters of Alan Pickersgill’s Communist Party candidacies and states that Alan Pickersgill has run for election at every possible level but has never achieved office.

Marion Baldwin - for Ward 2
Marion Baldwin has filed for a seat on Guelph city council on Sept. 15/03.
She is well remembered as the chair person of the ill fated pesticide review committee. Marion Baldwin will no doubt be running on a platform of once again attempting to inflict her anti pesticide use visions upon an unwilling Guelph population. A vote for Marion Baldwin is a vote for city control over your lawn and a vote for the creation of the Pesticide Ban Police.
Left frustrated after the overwhelming rejection of her committee’s report, it seems that Marion Baldwin is salivating at any opportunity, no matter how remote, of grabbing a taxpayer funded job for herself.
After all, she has tasted first hand how lucrative it is to be “in the loop” at city hall!

Kate Quarrie is the front runner for Guelph Mayor
The announcement on September 3 2003, that Kate Quarrie has set her sites on the job of Mayor of Guelph, brings with it an awesome background. Kate Quarrie is no stranger to long term community involvement and excellent leadership abilities.
The other Mayoral candidates have worthy platforms.
Billy Craven wants to cut back on the grotesque waste of taxpayer’s dollars which are spent on so called consultants and encourage the present city hall staff of highly paid ‘civil serpents’ to pitch in and do their jobs without the added expense of the endless line of pre picked, $400 an hour ‘consultants’.
John Ustation is asking the logical question of why does the present regime at city hall want to build a gazillion dollar monstrosity of a new City Hall? ... when we have other priorities like water and garbage. He would also have Guelph City Hall more accountable to the citizens.
All laudable concepts, but for Best Bet for the new Mayor of Guelph in November, Guelph Alert’s forecast is solidly on Kate Quarrie for Mayor.

Laura Baily - for Ward 1
Laura Baily has filed to win a seat in Ward 1.
Laura Baily’s responsible perspectives on the issues would be a very welcomed voice in the new Guelph city council. She ran in the last election November 2000 and was denied a seat by only 12 votes. This time it will be more than 12 plus on the winning side!
Laura Baily is member lb12 of the Guelph Alert Forums and can be contacted at:

Dr. Mirza Baig - for Ward 6
Dr. Mirza Baig has filed to be elected in Ward 6 on August 25/03.
Mirza Baig?s substantial background of dedicated involvement in community issues, coupled with his outstanding academic achievements, his affiliation with the University of Guelph and abilities to bring various groups together for harmonious results, combines to produce an excellent choice for councillor in Ward 6.
Dr. Mirza Baig believes in addressing the issues according to the wishes of Guelph citizens and taxpayers and states that there is no place for arrogance in his dictionary.
The present Ward 6 incumbents Marilyn Shapka and Karl Wettstein clearly have their own different dictionaries.

Some Good Garbage News
From August 5/03 until Sept 26/03, Guelph residents can put out their unwanted bulky items for collection by the city. Items like furniture, appliances and other bulky castaways can be put out with the trash on the regular garbage pickup day. Residents who want to dispose of bulky items must call the city at 837-5678 to let them know that there is a bulky item in need of a pickup. Now there is a Wet Dry “PLUS” that is a very good thing.

Another Riot in Guelph - It’s a Downer
Once again, Guelph’s downtown core was taken over by violent rioters. In the early morning hours of Saturday July 19/03, 500 rioters took to the streets. Groups of over 40 men at a time, fought for more than an hour while the police were once again helpless to stop the chaos. Due to the frequency of these situations, council member Cathy Downer has proposed the installation of cameras for downtown Guelph, to try to curb the ever growing violence. That may be an idea worthy of consideration.
Mayor Karen Farbridge spoke to the Downtown Board of Management and stated “Our downtown has a vibrant, healthy night life”!
